The BBC has announced Doctor Who Extra – a brand new series exclusive to BBC iPlayer. The previous behind-the-scenes show, Doctor Who Confidential, was dropped in 2011 due to budget cuts and a focus on original commissions.

Doctor Who Extra will follow a similar format as Confidential. BBC calls it “much more than a ‘making of’ show as we follow Peter Capaldi every step of the way throughout the creation of his first season as the Doctor. Over the course of 12 programmes we trace the highs and lows of Doctor Who’s most ambitious run of episodes yet, getting the inside take on series 8 from the people who made it.”

The 10-minute show will be available right after each episode. Expect to see interviews with Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson plus guests Frank Skinner, Keeley Hawes, Michelle Gomez, Ben Miller, Foxes and more, plus contributions from the crew.

BBC promises: “Packed with emotion, great stories and a real sense of ‘access all areas’, Doctor Who Extra is essential viewing for everyone who’s ever watched Doctor Who and wondered what it’s like to be a part of the team that brings this global phenomena to our screens.”

No word yet on whether the ABC will be running the series but I think it’s likely. I’m disappointed at the short length though, Confidential used to run for 45 minutes. Hopefully if it proves popular they’ll think about doing a longer show for next season.
