And look who’s on it. HBO has released the very first promotional image for season six, and it features a blood-spattered image of Jon Snow (Kit Harington). TV series and book series fans alike are still awaiting the reveal of Jon Snow’s fate after he was attacked by members of the Night’s Watch and left for dead at the end of A Dance with Dragons and the Game of Thrones season 5 finale.

Harington has been spotted on set several times over the last few months and fans are avidly watching for signs of a new hair cut – dubbed Harington Hair Watch- to see if the actor’s stint on Game of Thrones is truly over. HBO has desperately tried to keep his fate a secret, employing everyone from Maisie Williams to a director supposedly telling Barack Obama that Jon Snow is dead. No one is listening.

A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has indicated a 2016 release for The Winds of Winter and it’s a fairly safe bet that the book will be released before the premiere of season six. It has also been reported that the show may start slightly later in April than usual. The real surprise was showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss’s sudden announcement that there will be at least eight seasons after spending more than a year insisting that there will definitely be no more than seven. The announcement came after much of the mediocre season five was panned by critics and fans. Season six is done and dusted, but it will be interesting to see what effect the indiscriminate killing off of important characters like Barristan Selmy will have on the future of the tv series. Let’s hope George has started on A Dream of Spring.
