From Geek hero to antihero

Producers of the upcoming American Psycho Musical have revealed that Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, will take the lead role as Patrick Bateman. Producers called Bateman one of the “one of the most iconic antiheroes of the 20th century.” The musical is based on Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel American Psycho, which was also adapted for film in 2000, starring Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in a much-lauded performance.american psycho the musical

Ellis’ controversial novel, largely a critique on capitalism,  sparked calls for it to be banned due to its graphic scenes of violence. It is narrated by Bateman, a wealthy, psychopathic New York investment banker who embarks on a killing spree. It of course went on to become a cult classic. On his lead character, Ellis commented that “I was living like Patrick Bateman. I was slipping into a consumerist kind of void that was supposed to give me confidence and make me feel good about myself but just made me feel worse and worse and worse about myself.”

The musical thriller runs from December 3 to January 25 at London’s Almeida Theatre. Matt will be bowing out of Doctor Who in the 2013 Christmas Special.
