The Weta Workshop team have revealed the new installation at Wellington Airport to celebrate The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Although fans have debated for years whether or not Gwaihir the Windlord was actually the “Lord of the Eagles” who featured in The Hobbit, Weta has modelled the great eagle carrying Gandalf on his character who appeared in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Great Eagles are one of my favourite Tolkien creations and Weta has always done them justice beautifully. They will join the giant Gollum installation that currently hovers over the food court at the airport.
