Fox Searchlight, which was behind last year’s Hitchcock film, is developing a biopic about the legendary Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien. Irish screenwriter David Gleeson will pen the script, which will focus on Tolkien’s time at Oxford University and as a soldier during WW1. Gleeson is described as a “Tolkien superfan and scholar of sorts”

Some think the new biopic could raise objections from the Tolkien Estate. An attempt to adapt author Steve Hillard’s novel Mirkwood: A Novel About J.R.R Tolkien back in 2011 stalled after a legal dispute with the Tolkien Estate. But the objection from the Tolkien Estate was on the novel itself, and was settled after Hillard added a disclaimer that the novel was fictional and not affiliated with the estate. It is worth noting that “Professor Tolkien makes a little-known visit to America-and sets in motion elvish powers embodied in a cache of archaic documents” is rather a different subject matter than a biopic. A study of his life shouldn’t really raise any objections, after all, there are several biographies in print. None which make much of his “elvish powers”.
